G.E. contracted me to build dense UI for power plant managers.
8 year effort

During some of the initial end-user interviews, we discovered that G.E. had been working on a solution for this product for upwards of 8 years without managing to get anything to market. The Users didn't want to give us any more time, it was go time.

*Unfortunately due to the extremely sensitive nature of this work, I can not show any UI or research work (visually) but I will speak to it.

Plan of attack

Another researcher and I found and categorized every piece of historical content related to this effort that we could. We sat with a mountain of unsynthesized thoughts and views collected over 8 years. We employed the use of some new A.I. tools to help cut down the initial task of content transformation. Once we boiled all the most needed features to the top we realized our new product didn't require any new research.

Discovering the (n) need

There are cases where there is NO universal dashboard for all users and if there ever was a case of this, it was here. The challenge then becomes, how to create enough boilerplate to encourage customization. The UI was extremely dense and required many SME's to guide us through any attempts at creating "default states."

Outcomes

Nothing feels better than getting the outcomes you need with less effort than anticipated. GE. was grateful we were able to find a way forward even without (new) end-user partition, and our little group got to set off all the alarms in IT (inevitable) by using AI tools for the first time.
